Onsite vs. Offsite Search Engine Optimization

The difference between onsite and offsite optimization can easily confuse even the most experienced SEO professional. Are you finding that limiting yourself about SEO content inside your website (as opposed to the many ways you can leverage your success outside of your website) has become, well, limiting? Whether you’re a web master, internet marketing guru or a beginner, here’s how to distinguish the difference between onsite SEO and offsite SEO as well as how best to improve your site’s success.

Onsite SEO Factors

Like the name implies, onsite SEO is all about what‘s on your site. From meta tags, website content, keyword density, and the name of each page, onsite SEO is the best way to get familiar with SEO and if your experienced, is a great reminder of the significant role SEO plays in your website’s success.

Use one of the many online tools available to check for popular keyword phrases, edit and then check the content for accuracy. Keep in mind that while keyword density is important, you don’t want to exceed 2-4%; otherwise, you’re likely to rank lower on engine searches.

Be Knowledgeable about Outside Linking

As you become familiar with onsite SEO, it’s important to watch the number of outside links you put into your page’s content. Master the fine balance of good quality vs. quantity of links and you’re safe from lowering your page ranking.

Link your site to other reputable sites as well as not including too many of them, or just adopt a ‘less is better’ approach. Just as high quality, rich in keyword content pages can let Google know what kind of site you run, so can the quality of your links which, in the end, will determine the success of your SEO.

What Makes Offsite SEO So Valuable

Making sure your onsite SEO is up to par is important, but so is keeping up with your offsite SEO maintenance. Planning an offsite SEO strategy can come in many forms, from growing your links in a variety of places such as article directories, blogs and press releases.

Think: how can I best leverage my website and/or links outside of my website? By engaging in regular participation of relevant forums and chat rooms, you can gain exposure in your particular niche.

If you are interested in using a blog to improve your search engine optimization, consider having a blog section on your webpage as well as offsite (which can attract backlinks.) Both sites can help you to improve your ranking while creating diverse avenues that can improve your visibility.

Tips for Onsite and Offsite Optimization

If offsite optimization still has you scratching your head, consider thinking of it like this: how you advertise yourself through offsite SEO is how you show the entire internet as a whole who you are and how successful you’ll be, whereas onsite SEO is just about what is inside your website.

That being said, both onsite and offsite SEO can be equally beneficial when done correctly.

  1. Joseph,

Solid tips on SEO. You are totally right about the keyword density. I have a couple of niche blogs that had pages that were a bit on the high side when it came to density and weren’t ranking well. Made a few changes, and very quickly they shot up.

Definitely, off page is the most valuable when it comes to SEO (via forums, article directories, guest posting, etc.). Other cool thing about off-page SEO is that you can very easily get to know a lot of the more influential bloggers out their via comments, etc.

    Thanks for the great post.

    • Hi Dean,Keyword optimization is really important as well as off page optimization. the combination of the two will yield a great result.
I am glad you find this post helpful.

Great post, i found it very interesting to read and i hope to read more of your work in the future.

  3. Great explanation. I have clients ask me all the time, why do we have 2 optimization options. The reason being we offer On-Site, then Off-Site, I personally don’t like doing Off Site until the On Site is done. Why do you want to point other websites to a site that has no SEO value? Most people grasp that and agree. Nice analogy about the marketing, you are putting yourself out there for the world to see. Be clear and get your message refined so you get the rankings and traffic you are looking for and not just spammy stuff that can hurt you.

    • I agree with you, On-site optimization is really important you need to have content that will make people to come to your site and also link to your website. Write quality articles and you will see your site rising in rankings.
